Touring Bikes

We have a small fleet of touring bicycles:

Ridgeback Voyage x 2

Ridgeback Expedition x 1

Each bike is equipped with both front and rear pannier racks, with a full set of Ortlieb waterproof front and rear pannier bags available. It is entirely up to you whether you use our bags.

The Ridgeback Voyage

This bike has been a roaring success and thoroughly deserves its excellent reviews. It is a classic tourer with a butted Reynolds 520 steel frame, heavy duty wheels, high quality Shimano components, cross top brake levers, mudguards, Blackburn rack and frame pump.

The Voyage is a bike designed from the ground up for the purpose of carrying large loads for long distances. The frame and the wheels are designed to take it. You can put a tent and a sleeping bag between the 2 large rear panniers; whilst at the front, there is are 2 small front panniers and a bar bag.

The Shimano Alivio / Deore mix 24-speed is low-geared to help you get everything up those mountain passes, and the Tektro canti brakes are powerful enough to keep your descent under control. You're all set for taking the longest self-supported route you've got time for.

Steel frames are ideal for touring bikes for several reasons. The inherent high strength of steel is a no-brainer for a bike that is likely to be laden front and rear. The inherent springiness (elasticity in geek-speak) of steel also means that long rides are less jarring and more comfortable. This elasticity also ensures that the frame is less likely to break during use with heavy loads (fatigue strength in geek-speak). It's possible to make aluminium strong enough to cope with touring loading cycles, but it's difficult to make it as comfortable.

Ridgeback Expedition

The Expedition gives a responsive, comfortable ride with the structural reliability essential for a traditional expedition bike. It has been designed for long periods in the saddle in remote locations.

The Expedition features a strong and lightweight Ryenolds 520 Cro Mo frame. It comes with mudguards and a rear pannier rack. The great Shimano Deore 8 speed groupset is reliable and smooth shifting. It is just what you need for long days on the road journeying to your next stopover. The bike has a a robust and smooth rolling Alex DH wheel set which takes punishing conditions and routes in its stride.
